Sure, ugly links will take a hit to CTR. I recommend using a vanity service.

Bitly pro allows you to add a custom sharing shortlink, so jaymail.net becomes jml.me and then i can customize the end bit with something pretty like jml.me/article - which looks nicer.

So for that process to work, i would have my original link (http://mydomin.com/pages/long-article-title) then use the url bulder to add tracking to the end (http://mydomin.com/pages/long-article-title?utm etc etc etc etc etc etc etc) then finally go to mt bitly pro account and mask to (http://mydo.mn/article)

Phew their must be an easier way!

Nice article Jay, some very useful stats.

I would agree that plain text tracking in possible but is massively detrimental to the number of click throughs received.

If I were to receive a plain text email that instead of saying:
www.jaymail.net it was encoded such as http://mxmmxfb.com/d121/45/45/we (for instance) then I know which one I would click.

I think an interesting topic to add to the mixer would be the use of sub-domains for link tracking and how much of an improvement that offers to click throughs.

Nice work.. one more point to add..

Tracking links don't need to be long and ugly (think bit.ly etc) and can even help you generate better click-throughs - for example when you use pURL's or PURLS.

A personalised URL combined with a personalised landing page can make for great conversions.
